What If We Stayed?

by Adeem the Artist

/
1.
Knoxville, you made us see magic In a knotted cathedral of trees Meandering down to the keyhole My lover, our child, and me And you taught us to weep with abandon As you brutalized tents without care Making progress a tokenized term without meaning And we threw our hands in the air I stay up at night and I day dream of leaving It honestly feels like the only way But there’s one dream I wonder is worth still believing What if we stayed? What if we stayed? I’m not honestly sure we belong here Don’t know if there’s good we can do Sometimes I believe that our hands are all tied To a system that ravages me and you But what if this city did love us? What if we didn’t have to move away? What if we rooted into this old earth That has cradled us- what if we stayed? We both lay awake browsing houses and think If this town felt like ours, we would be less afraid And we write lists of cities that could steal our heart but, Knoxville… What if we stayed? What if we stayed?

about

What if everyone in Knoxville gave us one dollar for this song and then we could buy a house here and never move away?
